At Leighton Primary School we are following the programme of study as set out by the Department of Education (2014).

During maths lessons, work is differentiated to the needs to your child, therefore you may find you child is working on objectives from a different year group.

Rationale

Mathematics provides pupils with a set of tools that allow children to understand the world by making connections. These tools include logical reasoning, problem solving skills and the ability to think in abstract ways.

Mathematics is important in everyday life and with this in mind at Leighton Primary children receive between 5 hours of math learning a week. It is important for us that children develop a positive and enthusiastic attitude towards mathematics that will stay with them throughout their lives.

We are dedicated to making sure that all pupils master the key concepts of mathematics, appropriate for their level of ability, in order that they make progress and avoid gaps in their understanding which could become barriers to learning as they move through education.

Aims

We aim to provide the pupils with a mathematics curriculum and high quality teaching to produce individuals who are numerate, independent, inquisitive, and enquiring. We aim to equip them with the skills to talk confidently about mathematics by convincing themselves or others that a conjecture is true.

Our pupils should:

• Understand the value of a number and where it fits into the number system.

• Know by heart number facts such as number bonds, multiplication tables, doubles and halves (appropriate to age).

• Use what they know by heart to solve calculations mentally.

• Calculate accurately and efficiently, both mentally and in writing and paper, drawing on a range of calculation strategies.

• Solve routine and non-routine problems including breaking them down into simpler steps. • Explain their methods and reasoning, using correct mathematical terms.

• Judge whether answers are reasonable and have strategies for checking them where necessary.

• Suggest suitable units for measuring and make sensible estimates of measurements.

• Explain and solve problems from the numbers in graphs, diagrams, charts and tables.

• Develop understanding of the properties of 2d and 3d sh;

apes and spatial awareness.
