Leighton Primary School

Year 2

Here you can find out the curriculum expectations for Year 2 and learn about what they will be doing this term.

Summer term

What a fantastic two terms we've had in Year 2 so far! The children
should be very proud of themselves, especially for their wonderful
performance of Jonah and the Whale at the end of the Spring Term. Well
done everyone.

This term we are very excited about our new topic, which is Global
Gardens. We will be learning about gardens from all over the world
including, rain-forests, deserts and ice-lands. We will find out about
the climates of each garden and what kind of animals and plants live
there. As well as this we will be looking at geographical similarities
and differences through studying the human and physical geography of a
small area of the United Kingdom, and of a small area in a contrasting
non-European country.

Additionally in the latter part of the term we will be going to
Burghley Gardens of Surprise and Ferry Meadows where we will get the
chance to explore the gardens first hand. Some of the Year 2 children
will be visiting Stibbington Residential Centre in June whilst the
other half of the year group visit some local parks and gardens. Let's
hope for some good weather!

Our author of the term is Michael Rosen. We will be reading and
discussing books such as 'Burping Bertha' and 'Little Rabbit Foo Foo'
and we will be listening to him perform a range of his poetry, such as
'Chocolate Cake' and 'We're going on a Bear Hunt'. In class we will be
unpicking the books in detail and taking part in competitive
comprehension races to help improve our inference and deduction
skills.

In Design & Technology we will be looking at kites from all over the
world and their purposes. We will then be designing and making our own
kites to fly on the school field.

We are sure we will have a fun packed and interesting Summer Term.
