Leighton Primary is very committed to providing all children with a broad and balanced Sports, Fitness and PE education. We have worked hard this year to ensure that our children are accessing a wide range of activities through a variety of experiences. Please see the report which outlines how we have spent our PE curriculum budget and the impact this has had on the children at Leighton.
The addition of Mr Miles has allowed the children to access a specialist approach to PE not only through the curriculum lessons but through sports clubs before school, after school and at lunchtimes which promotes a healthy lifestyle and teaches children how to develop healthy bodies and minds.
The format of sports day this year has been adapted to become more inclusive. With the children having been in their school houses for a full academic year, they are beginning to learn the value of teamwork and how best to contribute towards their teams. Children were given a voice regarding sports day to ensure that every child was comfortable and confident in the way in which they were participating.
At Leighton, the children swim in years: 2, 4 and 5. The data that we currently hold, is of those children who are in our year 6 cohort (they last swam in year 4 [3 and 2], due to us changing the year groups who go swimming. Therefore, the results are lower than what we would expect in future).
At that time, there were 57 children tested, of whom 12 could swim 20/25m or further. Therefore, this gives us the percentage of 21% who can:
• Swim competently, confidently and proficiently over a distance of at least 25 metres
• Use a range of strokes effectively
• Perform safe self-rescue in different water-based situations
