Addition & Subtraction *Get children to count at any given opportunity e.g. How many flowers on the plant? How many leaves are there? How many flowers and leaves are there altogether? *Practice counting forwards and backwards to 10, 20 or beyond. *Play Snakes and ladders, rolling the dice twice for each turn. Add the 2 rolls of the dice together. *When preparing food, there are often opportunities for counting and adding. Making sure there are enough knives and forks and sharing out fruit and vegetables are examples. *During play you could ask your child how many red cars/lego blocks they have and how many blue cars/lego blocks they have. How many cars/lego blocks are there altogether? *Make up some number stories about animals in a field, people on a bus or cars in a car park. These could be linked to the toys your child has. Use First, Then and Now to explain the story. Here is an example:- First there were 5 people on the bus. Then 2 people got off the bus. Now there are ? people on the bus. Your child could have a try at making up their own number stories using First, Then and Now. An extension of this is to have a starting number and an end number and your child needs to work out the missing number. An example of this would be:- First there were 7 ducks on a pond. Then some ducks swam away. Now there are 5 ducks. How many ducks swam away? *Play a game where you count out some pegs/cuddly toys/straws/lego blocks. Cover them over with a tea towel. Add some or take some away while they are hidden. Get your child to work out how many were added or taken away. *Books to count along with Mr Gumpy’s outing - John Burningham https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mi_DV_DWN8M The Shopping Basket - John Burningham https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NY5sPN0PpdM Mouse Count – Ellen Stoll Walsh https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uNH6i7239FI Kipper’s Toybox – Mick Inkpen https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GyvB0M7vFfg

Numbers to 20 *Encourage your child to count beyond 10 out loud in order. *Once children know number names in order they need to be able to match quantities and their numbers, realising that as we count we are counting on 1 more. *Give your child a collection of buttons/pennies/lego blocks to count making sure a finger is put on each object as it is counted. We always encourage the children to line up objects if they can to stop them from counting objects twice. *Use a puppet or cuddly toy. Encourage your child to listen out for any mistakes they might make as the toy ‘counts’ out loud. Your child will need to help them as puppets and cuddly toys aren’t very good at counting. *Show some objects that the puppet or cuddly toy has counted, telling your child the number of objects. Ask them if they are correct. Encourage lining up the objects to count them more accurately. Can your child tell you 1 more and 1 less than the number of objects? *Ask your child to help you when writing numbers in order. Make mistakes by missing numbers out or writing the digits the wrong way round (31 instead of 13).

Doubles To double a number means to have twice as many. *Use a mirror to show how we can can double objects and even people. *Spot doubles when playing games e.g. two numbers the same on dices/dominoes. Show 2 different numbers asking if they are a double. Why not? *Show doubles 1-5 by using the same fingers on each hand. *Show doubles to 10 by using your hands and your child’s hands. *Use pegs, cars, lego, or pennies to show doubles. *Play Snap or matching pairs games. *Make a tower of cubes. Can your child make a tower that is double the height? *Using sand or water, can your child find a container that holds double the quantity of the original container? *Use a butterfly shape to show double numbers using pompoms or stars. How many different butterflies can be made? Can a butterfly be made that isn’t showing a double number? Why not? Halving & sharing Sharing involves sharing equally between 2 groups. Half is one of the 2 groups. Begin by halving small quantities. Once children are more confident they can explore sharing with 3 or 4 people. They will notice that sometimes there are items left over which they might have ideas about how to solve this problem. *Sharing grapes, raisins, apple slices or strawberries – Say that you are going to share them between 2. Place more in one bowl and suggest you have shared equally. Encourage your child to help you to share them fairly by taking it in turns to give each bowl a piece of fruit until it is all shared out. *Allow opportunities for your child to share objects which could include food, playing cards or even pieces in a puzzle. They can be shared between 2, 3 or 4 people and it also means that sometimes there will be pieces left over. *Invite 2 cuddly toys to have a picnic. This can include any small parts (lego, building blocks, beads) to use as pretend food. Make sure the ‘food’ is shared equally. What will happen if another teddy joins the picnic?
