Pupil Premium at Leighton Primary School

What is Pupil Premium?

Pupil Premium was introduced by the Department for Education (DfE) in 2011, as additional funding for pupils who receive Free School Meals and who are Looked After Children. This is because the DfE have recognised that good education is the key to improving young people’s life chances. This is particularly true for children from low-income families, or who are Looked After Children, who are far less likely to leave schools with good GCSE results than other children. The Pupil Premium, using additional resources from outside the School’s Budget, is intended to address the current inequalities by ensuring that funding reaches the pupils who need it most. The DfE have stated that schools have the right to spend this funding as they see fit based upon their knowledge of pupil needs.

Schools, headteachers and teachers will decide how to use the Pupil Premium allocation, as they are best placed to assess what additional provision should be made for individual pupils.”

The Pupil Premium Grant - Leighton Primary School  

At Leighton Primary School we are constantly striving for achievement for all our pupils. Our exemplary pastoral care and rigorous monitoring and tracking of all pupils helps us to identify any pupils who are at risk of not making sufficient progress and have helped us to plan and implement effective intervention strategies.  As a school set within the context of high deprivation and with the number of pupils eligible to Free School Meals well above the National Average, there is the potential challenge that our children have a higher  number of barriers to achieving the best that they are capable of  .  Recognising some of these differences we have been very clear in our vision that we aim for every single one of our pupil premium funded children to reach national expectations in the core areas. We encourage and promote high aspirations and ambitions for our pupils whatever their background. We strongly believe that all children should be given the opportunity to achieve and at Leighton we strive to ensure that all children are taught to believe in themselves and inspire all children to reach out to achieve their aspirations and to realise their full potential.

At Leighton we regularly identify, monitor and assess the barriers that our disadvantaged children may face to ensure our whole school provision and ethos address these issues. All children  have their attainment and progress rigorously tracked by the Leadership Team and we ensure that we analyse the standards of our  disadvantaged children as a group. This is to ensure that performance of our disadvantaged children is at least  good and that these children are making at least as much progress as their peers and that any gaps identified are addressed and closed. In addition, the school ethos is that the progress, attainment and well-being of disadvantaged children is everyone’s responsibility throughout the whole school. All staff have high expectations of all children and provide the very best in terms of teaching and welfare support to ensure our children thrive and flourish. 

What are the potential Barriers to future attainment for our pupils eligible for Pupil Premium? 

As a school we are aware of the challenges that a large majority of our children face. We work tirelessly with our families to support them in ensuring that all of our children have an equal chance of achieving their potential at our school. Being aware of these barriers enables us as a school to address and overcome the issues that a large majority of our children can face on a daily basis.

Our school is in the highest 5% of areas for deprivation in the country in accordance with the Cabinet Office Multiple Indicator of Deprivation.This can consequently provide the school with a higher number of challenges for attainment such as:

  • Parents finding it more difficult to support children academically at home as they themselves found school and the education system difficult
  • Poorer language and communication skills particularly when the children enter school in Reception 
  • A high number of our children not being 'school ready' when they enter Reception and having to teach the foundations to cope in school such as toilet training and teaching the children how to get dressed and to socialise and communicate with others 
  • Less boundaries for behaviour and routine in the home. As a school we currently have 21 families that access a Early Hep Assessment for support for behavior of the children in the home
  • A high number of referrals for complex emotional and social issues that have led to children having to cope with mental health issues.
  • A higher number of children that have to be referred to Children's Social Care for complex family situations that can seriously effect the welfare and happiness of a child to flourish in school 
  • Children arriving at school hungry and not having the resources for school due to demands on financial problems in the home. 
  • A  high correlation between the number of children who receive Pupil Premium funding and those that have an identified special educational need 

Governors support for Pupil premium Spending

At Leighton our Governing Body will robustly challenge the Headteacher in ensuring that the Pupil Premium funding allows all children the opportunity and chances to succeed at our school. The Headteacher meets with the FGB and the Finance committee at least  half termly to update them on school standards and 'group' performance including that of the disadvantaged group. Funding is allocated to address any performance issues and concerns across the school quickly and efficiently to allow the learning gaps to be addressed. Governors are all allocated key core subjects in the curriculum to monitor and as part of the half termly visits, the performance of the disadvantaged group is discussed and challenged with senior leaders through lesson observations, looking at specific interventions, looking at progress in books and talking to the children. The Headteacher will also provide Governors with an update on child protection referrals and attendance figures as part of the HT report at Governors meetings which are two key areas that can have a significant effect on the performance of the disadvantaged group. 

Pupil Premium Spending at Leighton Primary School

We are committed to ensuring that Pupil Premium Funding is spent to maximum effect.

We are required to publish online information about how we have used the pupil premium funding.

The 2016-2017 Pupil Premium Grant for Leighton Primary school was £242,300. We had 186 children eligible for the Pupil Premium Grant.

We have largely targeted our additional pupil premium funding on:

  • Leaders in school that can robustly monitor the progress of our disadvantaged group of children to ensure they are reaching their potential and where needed put in place specific intervention to meet learning needs 
  • Focused intervention taught by qualified and trained teachers and HLTAs where children need support to maintain the learning of their peers.
  • Each year group having a HLTA to ensure that teachers are supported by high quality and trained teaching assistants that can work with specific children to bridge any learning gaps. 
  • An attendance officer who will ensure that all of our children attend school, everyday and on time. The attendance officer works closely with families to ensure that they are clear in their understanding that children need to be in school everyday and on time to reach their fill potential. 
  • High quality pastoral support where life outside school may be presenting some very difficult emotional challenges to our children. 
  • A free daily breakfast club run by volunteers to ensure that our children start the day fed and  'ready to learn'. This is enhanced by access to sports activities delivered by a qualified sports coach. 
  • Enriching experiences both through visitors coming to our school and through the children having experiences outside the local community . The school funds school trips and visitors to allow the children to enhance their knowledge and understanding of the world around them. Each year groups has at least one funded trip per term to ensure that children's lives and experiences allows their learning to be enhanced .

Pupil Premium Strategy Review (January 2018)

As a school we are currently undergoing a full Pupil Premium Review. This is being led by a Headteacher of a local outstanding Peterborough Primary School. Andy Lyons has currently made two official visits to our school and his work has included:

  • Interviewing the Headteacher and senior leaders with regards to Pupil Premium funding allocation and impact on standards
  • Discussions with the Chair of Governors with action planning to improve impact of spending and addressing school standard priorities
  • Observing key interventions where Pupil Premium funding has supported staff allocation, staff training and resources
  •  Quality First Teaching  -A learning walk around the school to observe children in the classroom context, samples of work and behaviour and learning attitudes around school.
  • Discussions with children with regards to additional support they have received both academically and socially
  • Discussions with the parents to ascertain their understanding of how Pupil Premium funding is allocated and the impact on their own children in terms of academic success and welfare needs.
  • Discussions of key case studies where Pupil premium spending has has good impact on achievement for individual children.
