Phonics and Early Literacy Skills

In pre school we prepare our children for phonics and literacy learning when they transition to school.

Little Wandle Foundations for Phonics

Our phonics teaching prepares our pre school children for formal phonics learning in school. We follow the Little Wandle Foundations for Phonics programme. Our practitioners are trained to deliver games that equip children with oral blending, initial sound recognition and alliteration. We also teach the ten nursery rhymes recommended by the scheme.

Early Writing Skills

We use ‘Squiggle while you wiggle’ and ‘Dough Disco’ to develop children’s fine motor skills and to prepare their hands for writing. Children take part in these adult led sessions daily.

We provide a range of activities to support children to develop their fine motor skills. We support children to develop a comfortable pencil grip and use terminology from the school handwriting scheme to encourage correct posture for sitting at a table to mark make.

Daily story and singing time

All children take part in a story and singing time once per session. The children enjoy listening to a range of stories including traditional tales. We revisit the same stories to enable the children to join in with the story language and rhyme.

Early Language Skills

When children arrive in pre school we assess their language skills using the Wellcomm Language programme. We put interventions in place for those children that need support with their communication and language skills.

We are also involved with the REAL project to support parents with their understanding of how to support their child.

Practitioners use the ‘Little Wandle Interactions’ techniques to support the children’s language development .
