This year, we are marking the centenary of the First World War (2014 to 2018) with commemorations that focus on remembrance, education and legacy. This week, each class made a giant poppy, which they added their own special messages of respect to. We displayed these on our school field for all to see. They looked beautiful and helped us remember that poppies are a symbol of hope and remembrance. 

In our classes we found out about the significance of the centenary and discussed what it might have felt like to be involved in the Great War. We also had an assembly where year 6 shared some of the work they have been doing in their classes with the rest of the school. They read us the Flanders Field poem and talked about why we wear poppies.

We finished our week feeling very thankful for the brave Armed Forces personnel of the First World War and every conflict since, who demonstrated the true meaning of 'service’.
